About the Encyclopedia of the Swedish Flora and Fauna:

Why is it published?

The aim of the Encyclopedia of the Swedish Flora and Fauna is to make people interested in, and knowledgeable about, the Swedish species and their habitats.
There are approximately 50,000 multicellular species in Sweden. The majority of these species are not covered by any identification handbooks at all, and much of the extant literature is either very superficial or extremely advanced. The Encyclopedia enables people to discover and learn more about the range and beauty of Swedish biodiversity.

How is it produced?

The Encyclopedia is issued by the Swedish Species Information Centre. It is part of the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative, commissioned by the Swedish Parliament. It is produced by an editorial board consisting of an editor in chief and a permanent staff of coordinators, project leaders, illustration editors and scientific editors. In addition, a number of illustrators, authors and experts are contracted to work with individual volumes. Some ten volumes are under production at any given time. In addition, the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative provides funding for inventories of, and research on, hitherto poorly known organism groups, thereby laying the foundation for future volumes of the Encyclopedia.

What’s the structure of the Encyclopedia?

Within each volume, the species are presented systematically, and the volumes may also be sorted systematically according to the alphanumeric code printed on the spine.
